Although 6000 people have already signed the petition, this will not be enough to convince the Mayor and some members of City Council not to sell our greenspace. Big efforts are still required to gather as many signatures as possible from all areas of the City. Announcements will be made by the City over the next few weeks and months regarding the potential sale and development of a huge amount of prime, publically owned land. Rather than developing entire golf courses the city may opt to approve development of portions of several golf courses. This will set the unfortunate precedent of selling public greenspace, put aside over many generations, to meet current budget needs. With the current Expression of Interest process for the golf courses, the only public consultation required is after the fact when the land is to be either rezoned or declared surplus. Show your support now before it gets to that stage by contacting your Mayor and City Councillor and MLA and continuing to gather new signatures.

What can you do?

Several neighbourhoods, golf leagues and ski clubs have organized to petition their members and households. More is better.

Petition signing events are being organized in various parts of the City for individual or group participation. Watch the website for dates, times and locations.

OURS will help you organize your own campaign big or small.

Contact us for assistance.

One page of the petition is 10 signatures. 10 pages are 100 signatures.

Whereas, the City of Winnipeg put forward the following Expression of Interest for seven City owned golf courses without community consultation: “City of Winnipeg Expression of Interest for commercial and residential development of city owned Golf Courses - October 26, 2011 497-2011 ”http://www.winnipeg.ca/MatMgt/FolderContents.asp?FOLDER_NAME=497-2011&YEAR=2011•

I, as a citizen of Winnipeg request genuine and timely public consultation on the need to protect our natural urban environments including the development of nature spaces, riverbank spaces, and parks. These park lands and river bank corridors add value to my community and we, the public should be engaged in the discussion of what we would like to see done with these publicly owned spaces ahead of developers and third party interests.
• I would like my City to build trust by working with recommendations of citizens’ committees and not allow developers to sidestep the intent.
• I would like to be ensured that the plan to protect our natural urban environments incorporates sustainable development principles
• I would like to be ensured that only low impact activities that let us enjoy the benefits of health and wellness be utilized for these greenspaces. Cross-country skiing, golfing, soccer, walking, biking, birding and simply enjoying urban greenspace are among the low impact activities these spaces can provide.
