Subject Line: Sale of John Blumberg Golf Course
Dear Mayor Bowman
Councillor ___________
I am writing to ask you to take John Blumberg Golf Course off the surplus list and stop the sale of this precious City heritage.
1) Blumberg’s golf course use and revenue is rebounding; 98% of users come from the City of Winnipeg. Public golf courses are affordable and accessible and offer social, physical, and mental health benefits
2) Large greenspaces like Blumberg are green infrastructure and must be part of our strategy to adapt to the climate change crisis; they are proven approaches for reducing climate risks such as flooding and rising temperatures, provide storm water retention and clean air, and that will provide significant long term cost savings. Blumberg also maintains biodiversity by providing necessary habitat for wildlife and endangered species
3) City Council recently unanimously approved in principle the purchase of an additional 1,000 acres of greenspace. It makes no sense to sell what our City presently owns and furthermore the City will never be able to replace such sizeable access to the river
4) The largest planned growth of the city will be in the west, which will make Blumberg more easily accessible for the newest residents of our city
5) We need long-term vision for the citizens of Winnipeg and the province of Manitoba
Thank you for acting on these concerns.
